Ballasted

“Its Hywind turbine, mounted on a ballasted vertical steel cylinder that floats upright and is anchored to the seabed, has a unique navigation system developed by Statoil to keep it in the position.” (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/07/07/us-statoil-windpower-floating-idUKKCN0PH1ST20150707)

That would be the anchor.

Buffertlies

“Research published by Environmental Sciences Europe last year that showed pollen from GM maize could travel up to three km, one hundred times further than the 30 meters established by the EFSA [European Food Safety Authority] in 2011.” (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/07/02/us-eu-gmo-efsa-idUKKCN0PC22W20150702)

Since butterflies can travel further than 3km and therefore easily avoid the GM pollen, the 30m buffer zone is purely for one-legged beetles.

Stubble

“It is vital that Scottish Natural Heritage be given powers to draw up Deer Management Plans on behalf of those owners and occupiers that fail to do so in a timely manner. More worryingly, action by SNH can only be taken when damage has already occurred; the classic closing the stable door after the horse has bolted scenario.” (http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/article/deer-management-provisions-in-land-reform-bill-welcome-but-fall-short/)

Unstable deer numbers mean they will continue to bolt the scenery.

Beeography

“The linden tree originated in Europe, and North American bumblebees may not be able to handle a chemical that occurs naturally in its nectar.” (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/06/30/us-usa-bees-oregon-idUKKCN0PA04G20150630)

Pesticide formulators have scrabbled to patent every substance in linden nectar. They hope to divert blame for the Great Bee Massacre to Victorian horticulturalists then sell it.

Smelmon

“Acidification of rivers could make young pink salmon, the most abundant type in the Pacific, smaller and more vulnerable to predators by dampening their ability to smell danger.” (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/06/29/us-climatechange-salmon-idUKKCN0P91XK20150629)

Damp is the least of their problems.

Crude Attempts

“Petty legal filings. Diversionary ballot measures. Counting abstentions as no votes. These are just some of the tactics U.S. oil companies used this spring to quash efforts by investors to win the right to nominate climate experts for board seats.” (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/06/29/us-climatechange-oilcompanies-governance-idUKKCN0P90DQ20150629)

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident – Arthur Schopenhauer

Welcome to stage 1.5 of Climate Change truth: ridiculous opposition.

Over-inflated Pests

“A pioneering genetically modified (GM) wheat crop that emits an insect alarm pheromone to ward off pests has not worked in field trials. … Compared to a control crop of wheat, the GM crops showed no improved yields, no reduction in aphids and no increase in attacks by aphid predators (such as parasitic wasps and ladybirds). … Making the site secure added around £1.8 million (US$2.8 million) to the study’s research cost of £732,000.” (http://www.nature.com/news/gm-wheat-that-emits-pest-alarm-signals-fails-in-field-trials-1.17854)

Humans appear to be the only alarming pests here.

“‘Double-muscled’ pigs are made by disrupting, or editing, a single gene … and … the breed could be among the first genetically engineered animals to be approved for human consumption. … The pigs provide many of the double-muscled cow’s benefits — such as leaner meat and a higher yield of meat per animal. However, they also share some of its problems. Birthing difficulties result from the piglets’ large size, for instance. And only 13 of the 32 lived to 8 months old.” (http://www.nature.com/news/super-muscly-pigs-created-by-small-genetic-tweak-1.17874)

And here too the humans rather than the pigs seem to be the sentient monsters.

How about working with nature, instead of failing to trump it?
