Peak pesticide

“By comparing similar farms using high or low levels of pesticides, the scientists found that 94% of farms would lose no production if they cut pesticides and two-fifths of these would actually produce more. …
A recent consultancy report commissioned by the ECPA [European Crop Protection Association] indicated that French farmers would lose €2bn of grape production without access to certain pesticides.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/apr/06/farms-could-slash-pesticide-use-without-losses-research-reveals

The agrochemical industry insists it’s all or nothing with their pesticides; they won’t have farmers cherry-picking.

Sicker and Thicker

“The UK government-funded study … is the first to link the controversial insecticides to the decline of many bee species in real-world conditions. … The study cannot show a causal relationship between neonicotinoid use and the decline of wild bees, says … a spokesperson for Bayer Crop Science.” (http://www.nature.com/news/controversial-insecticides-linked-to-wild-bee-declines-1.20446)

Expected response from UK government? “Although this study adds to the growing pool of evidence that neonicotinoids adversely affect bees, until we can speak to bees directly, to hear why they’re getting sicker and thicker, we can’t punish the agrochemical industry unduly.”

Boondaggle

“15 countries have now told Brussels they will send territorial exclusion requests to the big agricultural multinationals including Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta and Pioneer. … Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wallonia will also be opting out on a regional basis. Wales has more recently opted out, making England the only country in the British Isles to allow GM crop cultivation.” (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/oct/01/half-of-europe-opts-out-of-new-gm-crop-scheme)

Wretched countries must now seek permission from munificent agrochemical companies?
