Plawstic

“Marine plastic litter can already be controlled through the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); the London Convention; the MARPOL Convention; the Basel Convention; Customary Law, and many other regional agreements.
Article 194 of UNCLOS, for instance, requires states to ‘prevent, reduce and control pollution of the marine environment from any source.
Measures shall include, inter alia, those designed to minimize to the fullest possible extent… the release of toxic, harmful or noxious substances, especially those which are persistent, from land-based sources… [and] shall include those necessary to protect and preserve rare or fragile ecosystems as well as the habitat of depleted, threatened or endangered species and other forms of marine life.'” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-43115486

If only the legal profession was as persistent.

Closing the Net

“Pollution in the womb is now linked to low birth weight, disruption of the baby’s lung and brain development, and a series of debilitating and fatal diseases in later life. …
Three times as many deaths are caused by pollution as by Aids, malaria and tuberculosis combined.” https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jan/24/end-civilisation-take-different-path

Fortunately pollution does not yet directly affect political decision-makers.

Monkeyswagen

“An unusual experiment: Ten monkeys squatted in airtight chambers, watching cartoons for entertainment as they inhaled fumes from a diesel Volkswagen Beetle.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/25/world/europe/volkswagen-diesel-emissions-monkeys.html

Whatever about test rigging—again—we might pay attention if car manufacturing executives had diesel fumes pumped into their offices.

Driving Down Plastic Waste

“The friction, pressure and heat of driving wears tyres down so much they produce an estimated average of 63,000 tonnes per year of plastic dust in the UK alone.” http://theconversation.com/ten-stealth-microplastics-to-avoid-if-you-want-to-save-the-oceans-90063

Plastic Factastic

“We’ve produced a whopping 8.3 billion metric tons of plastics since the 1950s. That’s enough plastic to cover every inch of the UK ankle-deep more than TEN TIMES OVER.” https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/plastic-facts-keep-getting-scarier/

If we continue landfilling it, we may keep the land above the rising sea level.

Love Litter

“A spokesman for [SEPA] said: ‘Our officers are comfortable that there is no environmental risk to the River Cree as a result of the bottles being released and, following inquiries, understand almost all of the bottles were contained and removed from the river fairly quickly by local residents.’ …
‘It was never my intent to harm the environment. It was more accident, naivety as well as stupidity in the execution. … It was just my intention to send a wee love bottle with a message to someone I had not yet met.'” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-40738484

100s litres fuel, 2000 bottles, 1 4G-enabled motorhome, 50 dates – priceless.

Microbads

“Scientists working at Bath University have now come up with a method to make microbeads out of cellulose, a starch found in wood and plants.
Tests have been carried which show the beads can be processed to be soft or hard but can also biodegrade into sugar in a short period of time.” http://uk.whales.org/news/2017/06/new-solution-to-plastic-pollution

Has anyone tried using sand? It may be less of a problem for marine life.

Time to try some plastic microbead-free products?
